Homework:

Homework is set from Monday to Thursday nights. Homework journals should be checked and signed regularly. They are a good means of communication between the school and the home. If a child has a problem (learning or behavioural), the notebook is also a good initial means of communicating mutual concern.

We favour giving a limited amount of homework. We like to emphasise, however, that the exercise given should not involve any unfamiliar skills but should give children practice in using skills previously taught in school.

Children attending Learning Support will have alternative or additional homework assigned to them. Please check this every night and sign.

Homework is not limited to written work – Reading, Spellings and Tables are also a very important part of your child’s homework and should also be checked.

Please see our Homework policy in the Policy section for more information.

Healthy Eating:

The children will have two break times each day, small break at 11.00am and their main lunch at 1.00pm.

We ask parents to cooperate with us in our healthy eating policy and not to give your child fizzy drinks, chocolate, sweets or crisps coming to school. Sandwiches, fruit, cheese or some cut up fruit and vegetables would constitute a healthy lunch. We would ask you to only include these foods as part of your child’s lunch.

We make every effort, as part of an all-round education, to promote healthy eating. Your support is paramount in this.

Lunch boxes & Beakers

Please ensure that your child can open and close their own lunch box and beaker (bottles). Also, if they have fruit such as oranges, apples and kiwis, please ensure that they are pre-sliced and ready to eat.

Treat Day

On a treat day, as determined by the school, parents/guardians may give treats to their own child and teachers may give treats to their own class.

These are special occasions such as:

  • End of term parties
  • Halloween
  • School trips and events

Although it is a special occasion, treats are not allowed on a child’s birthday.

Parent / Teacher Communication:

Parent-teacher communication is welcomed at Kilmurry NS.

Formal Parent/ Teacher meetings are held annually, usually in November each year.

Please avail of the pupil homework journal to write a note or to send a message to the class teacher.

Should you wish to meet your child’s teacher, it is best to make an appointment for a specific time with the school office. Please do not interrupt the class learning time to talk to your child’s teacher unless in an extreme emergency.

All visitors must report to the Office first before going to classroom during the school day.
